A statement from Nuneaton Arts CIO (the charity that runs the Abbey Theatre & Courtyard):
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council have announced a consultation on Pool Bank Street Car Park with proposals to reduce the number of available parking spaces.
This can be accessed here: https://abth.uk/nbbcparking
The Abbey Theatre is against this proposal but has offered an alternative suggestion for consideration.
Our response to the consultation:
1. Do you support the installation of gates as outlined in the site plan image.
No.
2. What is the reasoning for your choice
This will nearly halve the available car parking spaces for theatre visitors which is already often full on a regular basis.
3. Provide additional comments or an alternative suggestion to help deter anti-social behaviour in this area.
The car park becomes a one way system by installing Traffic Flow Plates that will allow “Entry” only next to the theatre entrance and “Exit” only next to the cadet building.
This means that the only gate needing to be locked would be the theatre entrance gate and could be done at any time with the knowledge that any car already parked would be able to leave.
Installation of ANPR cameras to identify cars and their owners involved in any anti-social behaviour.
More frequent police patrols.
Please find attached a diagram of our suggestion.
We would like to have your support in preventing more restriction on available car parking which has already suffered from the closure of the Abbey Street car park and the cancelled build of the proposed multi-storey replacement and would urge you to enter your views on the consultation.
